What Is the Fish Bowl Game?
The Fish Bowl Game is a 3-round party game that blends elements of Taboo, Password, and Charades — using the exact same slips of paper for all three rounds. Each player writes a few words on slips, drops them into a bowl (hence the name), and then teams take turns guessing as the clue-giver draws from the bowl and tries to get their team to say the word.
Round 1 is talking (describe the word freely), Round 2 is one-word clues (memory challenge), and Round 3 is silent gestures (pure comedy). The game works because everyone remembers the words from previous rounds — by Round 3, the bowl has become a shared inside joke.
Fish Bowl vs Salad Bowl — What's the Difference?
None — they are the exact same game. The only difference is the name. Some groups call it "Fish Bowl" because you use a fishbowl to hold the slips. Others call it "Salad Bowl" because a salad bowl is what's on the party table. A third version called Celebrity uses only famous names in the bowl. All three games have identical rules.
In this guide, "Fish Bowl Game" and "Salad Bowl" refer to the same game. If you've played one, you've played all of them.

The 3 Rounds
Describe It (Taboo-style)
- Clue-giver draws a slip, starts the timer, and talks.
- Say anything — sentences, sounds, stories.
- Cannot say any part of the word on the slip.
- No gestures or miming.
- Correct guess = 1 point, draw the next slip.
- Timer runs out → turn ends.
One Word (Password-style)
- Same words back in the bowl, shuffled.
- Clue-giver says exactly one word as a clue.
- No sentences. No sounds. No gestures.
- Memory from Round 1 is the secret weapon here.
- A single word that triggers the team's memory.
Act It Out (Charades)
- Same words one more time, shuffled again.
- No talking at all. Gestures, sounds, and acting only.
- This is the round where inside jokes become hilarious.
- By now everyone has seen every word — it's pure recall speed.
After Round 3, tally all points across all three rounds. The team with the most correct guesses wins.
